Omar: The butt of the gun is on my shoulder, unfortunately

Omar Abdullah was sulking like a teenager (whose team just been thrashed out of the world cup) while talking to Barkha Dutt. Omar told Barkha, he will reach out to families who lost their kids to the recent mayhem as an act of atonement.
All I have is pity for Omar and his brigade.
I still remember watching him live on 22nd July, 2008 and speaking as a Kashmiri who was proud to be an Indian and a Muslim. That day I was proud of this politician from my state, who was so clear in his thoughts and looked bright. Most of the Indian youth (Including Kashmiris) applauded Omar’s great speech made in the Indian Parliament.
Few months after the speech, in January 2009, J& K election results were out. This was the time when the whole world was going through Obama fever and there was hope in the air across the globe. Omar Abdullah somehow got the coveted chair of CM of a state which was still yearning for a leader who could be a savior more than a leader. Everybody had hopes from the new CM for a change in the gloomy future of this cursed region.

Omar's tenure began with a seriousness of attire and techniques. He handpicked people who were quite inexperienced in the administrative skills yet successful with their business ventures. He had a plan to begin with and wanted to run the state on the modus operandi of a successful corporate house. The people (even in NC) who were skeptical of this approach chose to keep mum because of the persona that was built to project seriousness of the Government and its leader.

The real problem started when this seriousness turned into arrogance. The coterie consisted of the new found talent picked by Omar Abdullah presented vision through ‘All is well’ prism. The bright Abdullah kid, who once proclaimed in his blog that it’s his birth right to rule the state of J&K, only grew saner in the boundaries of the fortress of Power. However, for a common citizen of the state the image of CM was turning into a brash and arrogant ruler with the passing times. Maybe, the metaphor “Power can corrupt best of minds” holds some truth.

The real downfall started after Shopian debacle and even Omar accepted that he could have handled it differently. The recent arrogance from the State government has only portrayed him as the Czar who is too brash to rule. I am not convinced if the recent appeal for atonement can undo the damage already done.

This recent dismal demeanor of Omar reminds me of Diego Maradona who lost the world cup despite all the good charm and luck that he carries.
